One of the icons of the paper industry has died. Donald Murray, founder of Donald Murray Paper and creator of the Bunzl Fine Paper division (later renamed The Paper Company) died on Monday 1 March, aged 80, following a short illness.
Donald Murray started in business in 1964 when he purchased John Cree Paper Merchants and re-named it Donald Murray Paper. His boundless energy and drive changed the face of merchanting in the 1970s and 1980s and he built his company into Scotland’s leading paper merchant.
In 1982 his company was acquired by Bunzl plc and with them he was tasked to build a network of similar merchants throughout the UK. As a result Bunzl Fine Paper was launched as a trading business in January 1987. Through acquisition this became The Paper Company 15 years later.
Alistair Macdonald, regional managing director of Donald Murray Paper today, says: “Donald Murray’s wonderful enthusiasm, passion and sense of humour made him one of the giants of the paper industry. He retired from his position as group managing director of Bunzl Fine Paper Europe in 1994 but he never lost his passion and interest in the business, often popping in for an update. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by everyone at Donald Murray Paper and throughout the industry.’’
