Morgana PUR Binder Speeds Yearbook Production

The School Photography Company of Banbury has installed a Morgana Adventure PUR binder to improve the speed and quality of school yearbook production.
As the name implies, The School Photography Company is a leading supplier of schools’ photographic needs and employs a nationwide network of photographers on work that includes individual portraits, class and school groups and a range of more creative work in the educational field. A 35-strong team at Banbury then prints, finishes and supplies this work according to the requirements of individual schools or parents.
Over the last year, TSPC has extended its activities into the area of school yearbooks, featuring the life and work of final year students, and this initiative, according to Director Nigel Owen, has grown quickly to a point where a large number of yearbook projects have already been completed. These are usually A4 books which may have soft or hard covers, contain an average of 30 pages and may be produced in runs from 100 to 300 on SPC’s HP Indigo print engine.
“To begin with”, Nigel Owen comments, “we finished these using manual perfect binding methods, but it quickly became apparent that this method couldn’t produce the volumes we required and there were also issues with the security of the bindings.” The Morgana Adventure solved both problems, producing books at over 150 per hour with the PUR system, using the strongest and most flexible binding adhesive available, producing the required durability. The other advantage of PUR in an application of this kind is that it does not, unlike hot melt adhesives, react adversely to inks, toners or coatings that may be present in the spine of a book. Other features that appealed to TSPC were the easy to use touch-screen operation and the closed gluing system which provided a clean operating environment.
At the same time as the Adventure PUR system the School Photography Company purchased a Morgana AutoCreaser 33 which is being used mainly for creasing cards and for perforating.
